Common-Sense Advice for Buyers
- Know the vehicle's market value
Be suspicious of a vehicle priced significantly below market value. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always ask for more information from the seller and if it looks suspicious skip it and look further.
- If possible obtain a vehicle history report
A vehicle history report can provide useful information, such as who holds the title to the car and whether the car has been in an accident reported to authorities or ever reported to be stolen, salvaged or damaged.
- Inspect the car
If possible have the vehicle inspected with a professional. Remember inspection is not a warranty and does not guarantee that the vehicle is free from defects.
- Confirm contact information
Always verify contact information. Even if the seller looks very trustable be cautious when it comes to sending money. Be extremely wary if the seller is located in another country.
- Get a detailed receipt about warranty
Ask the seller for a receipt that states whether the vehicle is being sold with a warranty or "as is."
- Title and registration
Make sure you know what's required in your country or state to transfer title to the vehicle you're buying. Some EU countries have different restrictions when it comes to registering vehicles that originate from non EU countries.
Common-Sense Advice for Sellers
- Confirm contact information
Be particularly wary of buyers willing to purchase your car sight-unseen, especially buyers located in other countries. Always verify the buyer's street address and phone number.
- About payments
Do not transfer the title until you have payment in hand at the agreed upon price. Be very cautious with checks and money orders – make sure they have cleared at your local bank before transferring the title. Beware of overpayments and other complicated payment schemes.
- Ownership transfer
When a buyer is picking up the vehicle or you are responsible of the transportation make sure you have talked through all the details such as: time of transfer, liabilities… etc.
