2012 Toyota Hilux

Toyota’s Hilux, which has earned itself a reputation for being indestructible through a number of Top Gear TV stunts, has been revised for 2012 with a new look and new equipment.

The pick-up, favoured transport of the Taliban and Libyan rebel forces, has been given a comprehensive restyle from the A-pillars forward, including a new bonnet, grille, headlights and bumper.  New allow wheel designs complete the visual upgrade, which lifts the looks of the Hilux and implies greater quality and style.

The interior has been given a new look, too, with a new upper dashboard design and horizontal instrument cluster (with chrome ringed dials on the top model).  It also gets the Toyota Touch multimedia unit that the Japanese company got so excited about bringing to the new Yaris last week.  The Touch package, fitted as standard to the HL3 and Invincible models includes a 6.1 inch touchscreen, Bluetooth and a USB port for connecting MP3 players.

The ute carries over its engines, the four cylinder 142bhp 2.5 D-4D and 169bhp 3.0 D-4D diesel units, but these now comply with the Euro 5 light commercial vehicle emissions standards thanks to the adoption of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which has cut CO2 emissions by 10 per cent over the previous model — the 2.5 D-4D (Double Cab) now achives 194g/km, “best in class” says Toyota.  Expect 38.7mpg on this model, with anything from 32.8mpg to 36.7mpg across the rest of the range.

The 2012 Hilux goes on sale in October.  No pricing information for Ireland yet.
