2013 VW Golf Mule Spy Shots
Volkswagen is hard at work on the replacement for the Golf, due in 2013. And we’ve pictured early Golf VII mules out on test.
If you’re thinking it looks too much like the existing Golf, don’t worry — this car is a mule testing the underpinnings of the new car in a current Golf VI body; a car which, itself, was really just a reskin of the older Golf V.
The Golf VII actually gets an all new platform, called MQB — Modularer Querbaukasten, which translates as “Modular Transverse Matrix” — which will debut first on the 2012 Audi A3. After the Golf VII the MQB platform will go on to form the basis on many other VW group cars, including the Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia, Audi TT and VW’s own Jetta, Scirocco and Touran. The MQB platform defines the position of the engine, front axle and pedal box, but supports flexibility in wheelbase and track width, so expect models based on it to vary in size — it could also underpin the next Polo, for example. We can see that this mule is carrying a wider track already, from the wheel arch extensions.
Expect to see engines from 1.4 litres to 2.0 litres, both petrol and diesel, all four cylinder. There will be power outputs from 85bhp all the way up to 300bhp in the new Golf R. Expect the iconic GTI to get a power boost too to compete with ever more powerful rivals from Ford, Vauxhall and Renault.
The Volkswagen Golf VII is expected to debut at the Paris motor show next in Autumn 2012 with sales starting in Ireland early in 2013.
