2012 Subaru Coupe Spy Shots
Subaru’s version of the coupe it is jointly developing with Toyota has been caught out testing in Germany.
Our ever vigilant spy photographers caught the un-named coupe with lots of disguise still, but some indications visible of how the car will differ from Toyota’s FT-86, which may be called Celica when both cars reach production next year.
And the differences seem to be limited to lights, with this car boasting in- headlight LED daytime running lights as opposed to the bumper mounted Toyota LEDS. Many other features, such as the window line and gaping grill, are common with what we have seen Toyota showing at motor show after motor show over the past few years.
The cars are also likely to share the same mechanicals. No four wheel drive, in spite of Subaru’s enviable reputation in that area, but a traditional front engined, rear wheel drive sports coupe. Both Toyota and Subaru are expected to use the latter’s boxer engines, which should give the car a great sound as well as a lower centre of gravity for improved handling. Expect a flat four 2.0 litre turbo as standard, although a 2.5 litre boxer may feature on the more powerful cars.
Toyota turned to Subaru for help developing a mid-sized coupe to replace the Celica after taking a stake in the smaller company, buying out some of the shares held by Fuji Heavy Industry.
No word on when this car or the Toyota equivalent will go on sale in the Republic.
